What Is Hydroponics And Why Is It Becoming Popular

Hydroponics is a method of gardening that uses only water and no soil. The plants are grown in a water-based solution that contains all the nutrients they need to grow. Hydroponics is becoming a popular way to garden because it is very efficient and does not require a lot of space. Additionally, hydroponic gardens can be set up indoors, making them perfect for those who live in urban areas. Finally, hydroponic gardening often results in higher yields than traditional gardening methods.

So if you’re looking for a new and exciting way to garden, consider giving hydroponics a try! You might just be surprised at how easy and rewarding it can be.

Benefits Of Hydroponic Garden

  • It is a sustainable form of gardening as it recycles water and nutrients
  • It uses less water than traditional gardening methods
  • It is perfect for small spaces as it doesn’t require a lot of room to setup
  • It is great for those who have limited mobility as there is no need to bend or kneel
  • It is ideal for growing plants that require a lot of water

How To Get Started With Your Basement Hydroponic Garden

You’ve probably seen hydroponic gardens before, but you may not have realized that you can easily create one in your own basement. A hydroponic garden is a great way to grow fresh fruits and vegetables all year round, and it doesn’t require a lot of space. Here’s everything you need to know to get started with your own basement hydroponic system.

First, you’ll need to choose the right location for your garden. Your basement should be well-lit and have good ventilation. You’ll also need to set up a water pump and timer so that your plants always have access to water.

How To Set Up A Hydroponic System In Your Basement

Before you even think about starting your basement hydroponic setup, determine what growing method is ideal for both you and your space. Depending on your space restraints, you may find one hydroponic system easier to set up than another. Here are three main systems for you to choose from.

Nutrient Film Technique

The nutrient film technique (NFT) is a flexible hydroponics system that employs a pump to move fertilized water to the plant containers and drain any surplus nutrient solution. In this system, you will need a watertight growing chamber, a holding tank for your nutrient solution, and an overflow drain.

To set up the NFT system:

  • Start by constructing your growing chamber. This can be as simple as using PVC pipes and fittings or an old fish tank.
  • Next, build a holding tank for your nutrient solution. This can be a 55-gallon barrel or anything similar.
  • Then, set up an overflow drain so that any excess nutrients can be properly drained away.
  • Finally, install a pump to transport the nutrient solution to the plant trays.

Ebb And Flow System

The ebb and flow system is another popular hydroponic system that uses gravity to flood and drain the plant roots with nutrient solution. In this system, you will need a watertight growing chamber, a holding tank for your nutrient solution, an overflow drain, and a timer.

To set up the ebb and flow system:

  • Start by constructing your growing chamber. This can be as simple as using PVC pipes and fittings or an old fish tank.
  • Next, build a holding tank for your nutrient solution. This can be a 55-gallon barrel or anything similar.
  • Then, set up an overflow drain so that any excess nutrients can be properly drained away.
  • Now, it’s time to install a timer so that the pump will turn on and off at specific intervals.

Drip System

The drip system is one of the most common hydroponic setups and is perfect for those who are new to gardening. In this system, you will need a watertight growing chamber, a holding tank for your nutrient solution, an overflow drain, and a timer.

To set up the drip system:

  • Start by constructing your growing chamber. This can be as simple as using PVC pipes and fittings or an old fish tank.
  • Next, build a holding tank for your nutrient solution. This can be a 55-gallon barrel or anything similar.
  • Then, set up an overflow drain so that any excess nutrients can be properly drained away.
  • Now, it’s time to install a timer so that the pump will turn on and off at specific intervals.

whichever hydroponic setup you choose, make sure you have all of the necessary materials before getting started. Once you have everything you need, setting up basement hydroponic systems is a breeze!

Install The LED Lights

This product is a 4′ 36 watt LED bar from the Philips Green Power LED production module. I purchased it at Commercial Light Products. There is no mounting bracket on them and it is indented on the side of each side. In the middle of the drain hole I cut a segment from 1.5″ ABS that sliced the side and pushed it into the indentation to hold the lights. On the back side of the ABS a clamp was attached. I placed a chain across a tin to secure the LEDs on the lower floor and attached a string to the upper shelf.

Tips For Keeping Your Plants Healthy And Thriving

Beginner gardeners can make most of their hydroponic plants thrive with a little care and attention. These tips will help you get started on the right foot and keep your plants healthy and happy.

Natural Light:

One of the most important things your plants need is sunlight. For indoor gardening, make sure to place your plants near a window where they can get plenty of natural light. You may also need to supplement with grow lights to give them the right amount of light.

Grow Lights:

If you grow plants indoors, you will need to provide them with grow lights. These special lights mimic the sunlight that plants need to grow. Make sure to place the lights close to your plants and leave them on for about 12 hours a day.

Water:

Plants also need water to survive. Most hydroponic systems will have a water reservoir that you will need to fill up every so often. Make sure to check the level of the water regularly and top it off as needed. Plants will also need nutrients, which can be added to the water or provided in a separate reservoir.

Nutrients:

In order for plants to grow, they need nutrients. These can be added to the water or provided in a separate reservoir. There are many different types of nutrients that plants need, so make sure to ask a gardening expert which ones your plants will need.

Conclusion:

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned gardener, setting up a hydroponic system is a great way to grow your plants. With a little care and attention, you can have healthy and thriving plants in no time!

There are many different types of hydroponic systems to choose from, so make sure you do your research before you start. Once you have everything you need, setting up your system is a breeze!
